In 2006, Dakolo auditioned for reality show Idols West Africa in Calabar. His songs of choice were Commissioned’s More Than I and Lemar‘s Time to Grow. His vocals impressed the judges, and was seen as a contenderfor the prize.
A week before the viewing of the Top 24 performances, Dakolo received the news that his grandmother had died.
He was declared the winner on May 26, 2007 at the home of Idols, Planet One. The show was televised the next day. He beat out runner-up, Omawumi Megbele with 63% of the votes.
With his victory, he was meant to take home amongst others, a contract with SONY BMG which did not materialize. But he went on to record with the maverick-Cobhams Asuquo, arguably africa’s best producer and after a long wait, Timi Dakolo will be releasing his debut album this 2011.
We celebrate his astounding vocals and energetically endearing stagecraft and dedicate our video of the week to him.
Let it shine-timi dakolo
