PASSENGER’S TALE: How We Landed Unprepared For At The MMIA

Okay, so a few days ago, loads of people were sharing their horrifying experiences at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos, and the shame the activities of officials, security personnel and service standards have brought to Nigeria, especially considering the fact that it is where foreigners get to interface physically with Nigeria for the first time. I ran into a friend’s experience on Facebook today and decided to share. Read the embarrassing experiences of Mr Solomon James below:

I have been away in Dubai for a 5 day leadership Retreat organized by Avenues to wealth. Lots of lesson to share in due time.
However, we arrived yesterday afternoon, through Etihad Airways @ about 3:10pm at the MM International Airport, and trust Nigerians, before the plane came to a final stop passengers we already up opening the overhead lockers, ready to disembark. That excitement of standing lasted another 30 minutes as they were looking for the ‘Ladder’ to take us down, as those in-charge were not on ground.

Question: Did we crash land or was it emergency landing?

When we finally came out thinking well this happens sometimes, the gates to the airport from the tarmac where we disembark where all shut. At first I found it very funny that there were no vehicle to convey us and now we can’t even get into the airport. While we were all thrown into confusion as what was happening and no one to give us any accurate answer, I saw a lady standing by the only access door that we were suppose to pass through and I went to ask her why we were out on the tarmac and could not gain access. She told me there was no light (Power) and as such we can’t use the elevators even after we have spent over 30 minutes on ground. secondly the security person with the keys could not be found and that she was calling them to come and open it.

After about what looks like forever, one Mr Aliu, came with about 20 keys and was testing them one after the other, and still could not open the door. I was so ashamed, when some of the foreigners were asking me what was happening. Imagine if it was raining, what is actually wrong with FAAN. So many questions running in my mind as we broke into clusters discussing this national shame taking right before our very eyes.
Suddenly, some one waved at us that another narrow entrance has been opened, as were all rushed towards that door, I asked myself, what happens to the physically challenged people if there was any among us.

It was a long walk to get to the Immigration desk to be cleared out, and the heat at our baggage claim session is a story for another day.

Finally got out of the airport 2 hours after arrival to engage another 4 hours in the Friday mad traffic rush.

Welcome to Naija the land were everything is normal.
